Meal Time

As Beans nurses the puppies less and less frequently, they are growing an interest in food (and they are growing teeth, which may be why Beans is less interested in nursing them!).  They are almost 4 weeks old; it is time to see what they think about eating. I scoop some wet puppy food (furtherContinue reading “Meal Time”

Bean Puppies – Week 3

Beans’ sweet puppers are 3 weeks old today. New this week: They are all up walking.  Teeth are emerging.  Rather than squealing each time I pick them up to weigh them or change the bedding, they approach me and wag.  The cutest little barks and snarls are emerging from the whelping box. They are learningContinue reading “Bean Puppies – Week 3”

Beans meets Teddy and Livie

On Wednesday, Anne and I met to walk Beans alongside Teddy and Livie to determine if they could be potential playmates (or at least, spend some tension-free time together).  In the past, mama dogs that we have fostered have enjoyed being able to go on longer walks with Teddy and Livie and then spend aContinue reading “Beans meets Teddy and Livie”

Introducing…

The children decide to give them names with “Bean”. Mae names the almost all white female Vanilla Bean. Dane names the dark gray one with the skinniest facial stripe String Bean. Nora wants a name with “heart” or “love” in it for the white female with the heart shapes on her side and rump.  AContinue reading “Introducing…”

The first week

Thursday, November 21st – Wednesday, November 27th Beans is such a good mama!  She is happy to get up to go outside and then eat and drink, but then she hurriedly climbs back into the whelping box.  Beans rearranges her puppies into a neat pile and then curls around them to offer them her nipples. Continue reading “The first week”

Lynn teaches us a few things about heartworm treatment

Lynn was clearly distressed and anxious in her crate.  But the instructions with which she came said that she should be crated for her own good.  What was happening in my guest room did not sound like it was good for anyone, however.  The point of keeping an animal more or less sedentary during heartwormContinue reading “Lynn teaches us a few things about heartworm treatment”

Following up with Daisy

Thank you to HSHV volunteer Sandra Pruden for adopting Daisy and then for giving me permission to share her beautiful photos.  See the gorgeous adolescent, and then adult, Daisy below! Sandra reports that Daisy is a joy (but we already knew that!).  She is a beloved member of the family.  Sandra told me that herContinue reading “Following up with Daisy”

Dog walking

While waiting for my dog walking class date to arrive, I received an email that there had been a cancellation in an earlier class.  Would I like to fill that spot?  Uhhhh….YES!! I arrived at the three hour training 15 minutes early.  For those who know me (and those who are getting to know meContinue reading “Dog walking”

The break between fosters

After Shadow and Midnight were lice-free and back at the shelter, we had an empty house (okay, well, not exactly.  We still had six people, a dog, and a bearded dragon!  But no foster animals!).  After about 24 hours, the kids started asking about when we could foster next.  I was eager to jump backContinue reading “The break between fosters”
